Dropper Posts - Choosing the correct size.

Before you drop some serious dosh on a fancy new dropper post, there's a few basic things you need to know to make sure you are buying the correct size post with the right amount of travel.

What we're aiming for is a post that is at the correct height for you at maximum extension and is nice and out of the way when you slam it down.

There's nothing more frustrating than a dropper post that puts the seat too high at maximum extension requiring you to try and push the post down a tiny bit to get the right height while also dealing with upcoming hairy terrain.

As a rule of thumb, it is better to buy a shorter post with less travel that will comfortably fit in your frames seat tube as you can always lift the post higher up in the frame to achieve a comfortable maximum extension ride height.

What you want to avoid is a post that is overall too tall with a seat tube component that is too long as you might end up with a seat position that is too high when the post is at maximum extension.

The two critical factors that will drive your post selection are:
  • Your frames maximum seatpost tube length
  • Your maximum post extension ride height

Mount Height
Drop Distance
Seat post length and frame protrusion

In the real world these elements affect:
Maximum extension height
Buying a post that is shorter is ok as you can pull the seat post further out of the frame so that when the dropper is at maximum extension it is at the perfect height.

A post with a seat post section and / or a dropper section that is too long will cause you grief as the seat will sit too high when at maximum extension and there is nothing you can do about it.
